Military and Diplomatic Highlights:
• The Ukrainian military reported the following Russian losses as of December 20th:
o 770,420 Soldiers (Wounded or Killed)
o 9,584 Tanks
o 19,823 Armored vehicles
o 21,220 Artillery
o 20,600 Drones
o 369 Aircraft
o 329 Helicopters
o 2,943 Cruise missiles
o 28 Warships
• As of December 20th, Russian personnel losses reached 2,200 soldiers. This is the highest daily number since the start of the invasion.
• International Assistance:
o Norway announced on December 17th that they will provide NOK 2.7 billion to strengthen the Ukrainian Navy. The Norwegian government on December 20th also announced that they are providing an assistance package that is worth NOK 186 million. This package includes small boats, reconnaissance drones, uncrewed surface vessels, loitering munitions, and mine countermeasure drones.
o Denmark on December 19th announced a military support package worth $292 million. This package will strengthen Ukraine's air defense and combat aircraft capabilities.
o On December 19th, the United Kingdom announced a new military aid package worth 225 million Pounds.
War and Atrocity Crimes Investigations Highlights:
• In October and November alone, over 2,180 civilian deaths and injuries were verified by the UN.
• The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine reported that between December 13-20, 510 new war crimes were registered.
• Ukrainian State Emergency Services reported that Russian shelling damaged an ordinance removal response vehicle on December 20th.
Humanitarian Impact and Response and Recovery Highlights:
• The intense fighting has led to a stream of evacuations, with nearly 40,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) from frontline areas in the past two months.
• The UN Migration Agency as of December 13th provided essential items (mattresses, kitchen sets, and thermoses) ahead of the winter season. These supplies were provided to over 80 evacuees at collective centers for IDPs in the western part of the country.
• As of December 17th, more than 360,000 people have received assistance to help them through this winter season.
• Approximately, 14,000 food parcels were distributed to elderly residents of Kherson by the Ukrainian Red Cross as of December 17th.
• On December 20th, Russia launched an attack throughout the country. This attack included artillery shelling, missiles and drones:
o This attack damages homes, schools, medical centers and infrastructure.
o At least one person was killed and seven injured.
o The attack also damaged the Embassy of Portugal.
• The UN has continued to provide relief supplies to frontline communities. On December 20, a UN interagency convoy delivered 12 tons of supplies to the Zaporizhzhia Region.
• The EU as of February 2022 has delivered 153,00 tons of supplies via the EU Civil Protection Mechanism. These supplies have included, but are not limited to:
o Energy equipment
o Protection and rescue gear
o Medical supplies
o Demining tools
Russian Dis-information Campaign Highlights:
• Russia continues to use dis-information strategies against Ukraine:
o Hate speech has been used to attempt to normalize Russian atrocities and war crimes.
o They have also attempted to rewrite history to justify their invasion.
• On December 16th, the EU sanctioned 16 individuals, and three entities involved in Russia's hybrid activities.
Cultural Heritage Protection Highlights:
• The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at the request of Ukraine, granted temporary enhanced protection to Babyn Yar, the site of one of the largest massacres of the ‘Holocaust by bullets’, and to the Odesa Literary Museum.
• The attack on December 20th damaged the façade of St. Nicholas Church.
